European Medicines Agency Adopts First Positive Opinion For Mock-up Pandemic Influenza Vaccine
The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has adopted the first positive opinion recommending the granting of a Community authorisation for a mock-up pandemic influenza vaccine. The objective behind a mock-up vaccine is to have a marketing authorisation in place that can be changed quickly in the event of a pandemic to include the virus strain responsible, once it has been identified.The vaccine concerned, Daronrix from GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals S.A.


Designer Hens Lay Anti-Cancer Eggs
Scientists at Scotland's Roslin Institute that produced Dolly the Sheep have genetically modified "designer" hens to lay eggs containing proteins that can fight human forms of cancer and other diseases. It is thought this will make a range of existing drugs easier and cheaper to produce.The hens are producing proteins that have the potential to treat arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and malignant melanoma, or skin cancer.


European Approval Of HIV Drug Darunavir Will Provide A Potent New Option With Fuzeon
Conditional marketing authorisation in the European Union of the new protease inhibitor (PI) darunavir (boosted with ritonivir) provides physicians with the opportunity to build a potent new treatment combination with the fusion inhibitor, FUZEON. The combination of FUZEON and boosted darunavir has been shown to give treatment-experienced patients a better chance of achieving an undetectable viral load than boosted darunavir without FUZEON.


New Drug Hope For HIV Patients For Whom Treatment No Longer Works
The drug company Pfizer says that its latest HIV drug maraviroc doubles the number of people with undetectable levels of HIV compared to the current treatments.The company revealed half-year results of two advanced trials of maraviroc on patients for whom treatment no longer works at the 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2007) in Los Angeles. Maraviroc belongs to a class of drugs known as CCR5 inhibitors.
