UIC Receives Grant To Find New Drugs For Bipolar Disorder
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have been awarded a three-year $2.1 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to develop a new drug to treat bipolar disorder.The goal is to develop a compound that is able to enter the brain and block the mania associated with the disease, says principal investigator Alan Kozikowski, professor of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy.


FDA Approves Over The Counter Weight Loss Pills
The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Orlistat for use as an over the counter weight loss drug for adults who are overweight. The drug, which was originally approved for prescription in 1999, will retain prescription status at higher doses for the medical treatment of obesity. The FDA said that the drug on its own will not work.
