| Federal Judge Denies Vioxx Class Action Status |
Plaintiffs' attorneys had requested a motion for class action status against Merck & Co. for personal injury and wrongful death after taking Vioxx, a painkiller which was taken off the market in 2004 after it was found to raise a patient's risk of heart attack or stroke. Judge Eldon Fallon, New Orleans, denied the request.There are approximately 24,000 lawsuits filed by people who claim to have been harmed because they took Vioxx.

| FDA Reaches Tentative Agreement With Pharmaceutical Companies On User Fees To Review Advertisements |
FDA has reached an agreement with the pharmaceutical industry that would require companies to pay fees to the agency for evaluating television advertisements in exchange for quicker reviews of the ads, the Wall Street Journal reports. Under the agreement, pharmaceutical companies would pay FDA $40,000 to $50,000 at the beginning of each year for each television ad campaign they planned to air.

| Out Of REACH: New Legislation Threatens Medicines |
Europe's proposed new chemicals legislation, REACH, could disrupt the supply of important medicines. David Vosvenieks, REACH issue manager at AstraZeneca (AZ), told Chemistry & Industry that two companies supplying intermediates required for two AZ drugs - one of them an anticancer therapy- have already warned AZ that they may no longer be able to guarantee supply under the new rules. Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline have also said they are in discussions with suppliers.

Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces have presented a new method with which to precisely control the permeability of microcapsules using the salt content and the temperature of the solution. In order to accomplish this, the researchers developed a theoretical model which exactly describes the processes in the polymer shell of the capsules.
