Zyban Zyban review

     .: Prescription

Zyban is an antidepressant used to treat seasonal affective disorder and major depressive disorder. Both of these disorders lead to serious mood swings, non-functional depression, and suicidal tendencies. Seasonal depressive disorder is known to cause symptoms during periods of low light, typically at its harshest between October and February. Major depressive disorder can cause sudden onset severe depressions. Both of these disorders are life inhibiting and can lead to self inflicted death if not treated.

In recent years, Zyban along with its generic form, bupropion, has been shown to assist with smoking cessation. Originally discovered as a side effect in patients with seasonal affective disorder and major depressive disorder, Zyban is now prescribed more often for its effects on the desire to smoke than it is for depression.

Patients with a history of seizures should not be prescribed Zyban in any form, including Wellbutrin, as it does carry an increased risk of seizures. This risk is increased for patients who suddenly stop the drug or who were moderate to heavy drinkers and then ceased drinking just prior to starting the medication. Zyban also has a negative effect on people with eating disorders, even those in recovery. Zyban contains an appetite suppressant and can lead to the re-manifestation of eating problems.

Regardless of whether Zyban has been prescribed to treat depression or to assist in smoking cessation, there is a risk of sudden onset suicidal tendencies. Other side effects which require a doctor’s intervention include sudden mood or appetite changes, panic attacks or increased anxiety, irritability and aggression, or mania and insomnia. These side effects can be signs of a more serious effect that has yet to surface and the patient should contact the prescribing physician at once should these symptoms appear.

A patient is having an allergic reaction and should seek immediate medical care if they experience swelling of the face, tongue, throat, or difficulty breathing sometimes accompanied by hives. This is a serious reaction and can result in death if not treated.

Headaches, vomiting and nausea, itching and sweating, loss of sexual interest, mild itching and constipation are typical side effects which patients find uncomfortable but physicians do not find dangerous warning signs. A little dry mouth or even changes in taste and appetite are quite normal. Initially when taking Zyban for smoking cessation the patient may experience short term tremors and hyperactivity that subsides within a twenty four hour timeframe.

Overdosing on Zyban whether accidentally or intentionally can result in a host of complications that require immediate emergency medical care. The onset of hallucinations, fainting, muscle stiffness, uneven heartbeat with shallow and difficult breathing, heart failure, seizures, or coma can happen quite intensely and quickly with overdosing. If the overdose is high enough, death is likely.

The use of Zyban should not be abruptly interrupted. If there is a need for a patient to cease the drug, they should consult a physician first.

Zyban has shown to be harmful to an unborn fetus and does pass through breast milk. Women who at risk for pregnancy should alert their doctor prior to starting the medication.

It is vital for patients taking Zyban to be clear of any MAOI inhibitors in their system and to avoid alcohol during treatment, as both of these factors can increase the risks of seizures.

Zyban has been quite beneficial in a large percentage of patients coping with seasonal affective disorder and major depressive disorder. Considering the seriousness of these disorders, this medication has been truly life altering.

Those who have successfully used Zyban to break the highly addictive nicotine habits such as smoking. While Zyban can be used to help break other addictions, smokers have been set free into a new lifestyle of health.
