Pharmacy and Drugs

     .: Prescription

Sometimes known as Orlistat, Xenical is a lipase inhibitor that is used as an aid to help you lose weight, by preventing the digestion of some of the fat you eat. Fats that are not digested cannot be absorbed and therefore do not contribute calories.

It is highly recommended that you take a good quality multi-vitamin when you are taking Xenical, as some of the important vitamins your body needs may be decreased when you take this medicine.

Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.

It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. Do not take more or less medicine than directed, and never adjust your dosage without discussing it with your doctor first.

Should you skip a meal, or indulge in a low fat meal, it is all right to skip a dose of Xenical, but do not double your dose to compensate for a high fat meal.

Contact your doctor if you notice any of the following: bodyache; chills; cough; fever; headache; nasal congestion; runny nose; sneezing; sore throat; tightness in chest; tooth or gum problems; troubled breathing; wheezing; bloody or cloudy urine; change in hearing; contagious diarrhea; difficult or painful urination; earache; frequent urge to urinate; or pain in your ears.

Orlistat is (S)-2-formylamino-4-methyl-pentanoic acid (S)-1-[[(2S, 3S)-3-hexyl-4-oxo-2-oxetanyl] methyl]-dodecyl ester. Its empirical formula is C29H53NO5, and its molecular weight is 495.7. It is a single diastereomeric molecule that contains four chiral centers, with a negative optical rotation in ethanol at 529 nm. Orlistat is a white to off-white crystalline powder. Orlistat is practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in chloroform, and very soluble in methanol and ethanol. Orlistat has no pKa within the physiological pH range. XENICAL is available for oral administration in dark-blue, hard-gelatin capsules, with light-blue imprinting. Each capsule contains 120 mg of the active ingredient, orlistat.
