Wellbutrin SR is the brand name for the generic drug bupropion. Other brand name packagings for this drug are Zyban SR, Wellbutrin XL. This medication is an antidepressant, used to treat anxiety, seasonal affective disorder and depression, by acting on the levels of certain chemicals in the brain. The brand Zyban of bupropian is used to assist individuals in quitting cigarette smoking via reducing withdrawal effects and cravings. Wellbutrin SR facilitates the balance of two neurotransmitters called dopamine and norepinephrine. Wellbutrin SR can also be used for other conditions not described here.
People who have seizure disorders or epilepsy, eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa, using another form of bupropion, or who have recently stopped alcoholism or sedative addiction should not take Wellbutrin SR. Individuals who have taken the following medications in the past two weeks should not take Wellbutrin SR: Parnate, Nardil, Azilect, Eldepryl, Marplan, which is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). There is an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior at the beginning of treatment, which increases if you are less than 18 years old. During the first twelve weeks of treatment it is important to meat with your physician regularly. Severe side affects such as mood changes, anxiety, mania, suicidal thoughts or aggressiveness should be discussed with your doctor immediately. Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without first consulting with your doctor. Disagreeable side affects can occur if this medication is suddenly stopped. While taking Zyban to stop smoking, do not take nicotine replacement products or smoke, because it can dangerously increase side effects. Avoid alcohol which may increase the risk of seizure. If you are a regular alcohol drinker, discuss this with your doctor.
It is important to discuss the following conditions with your doctor if they apply to you, before taking Wellbutrin SR: heart disease, hypertension, kidney or liver disease, insulin controlled diabetes, head injury, spinal cord or brain tumor, or are currently taking steroids, have recently used or abused alcohol, sedatives, narcotic pain medication, diet pills or street drugs such as cocaine, crack or speed. If any of these apply to you, you may not be able to take this drug, require a modified dose or need be monitored or tested routinely by your physician.
The US FDA categorizes drugs based on safety for pregnant women. Wellbutrin SR is categorized as C. This indicates that this drug may cause harm to an unborn child, but you should discuss all risk factors with your doctor before taking this medication if you are expecting. Wellbutrin SR can pass through breast milk to an infant. Do not take Wellbutrin SR if you are nursing; discuss the safety with the pediatrician and your physician first.
Wellbutrin SR should be taken precisely as directed by your physician. Do not take doses in larger amounts or for longer periods of time than prescribed by you physician. The dosage amount may be adjusted to determine the best effective amount for you. Wellbutrin SR can be taken on an empty stomach, but with eight ounces of water. Take Wellbutrin SR whole, do not crush, chew or break the pills. Breaking the pill will interfere with the time release mechanism of the pill and disrupt the levels of the medication in your blood stream.
When taking Zyban to quit smoking, you may have the urge and continue to smoke the first week of treatment. Choose a quit date during the second week of treatment. If you are still having trouble quitting after seven weeks of Zyban treatment, contact your doctor. Some physicians prescribe nicotine supplement products to help with the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking. So not smoke while using the nicotine products, because you may develop dangerously high nicotine levels in your body. Do not stop taking this medication abruptly without talking to your physician. Store this medication at room temperature and away from moisture.
A missed dose should be taken as soon as it is remembered. If it is almost time for the regularly scheduled dose, do not double the dose, and simply take the regularly scheduled does.
An overdose of Wellbutrin SR presents with symptoms of nausea, sweating, vomiting, less urination, rapid heartbeat, tremor or shakes, aggression, coma, seizures, blurred vision, and sweating. If you think you have overdosed seek emergency medical attention.
A severe reaction indicates an allergy, to this drug, which may be life-threatening, seek emergency medical intervention. Allergic reaction presents as shortness of breath, hives, swelling of lips, throat, face or tongue, fainting or rash.
If you have a seizure or an uneven, rapid heart beat stop using this medication immediately and seek emergency medical treatment. Other side effects should be discussed with your doctor, but do not stop taking the medication. These symptoms are headache, migraine, sleep disruptions, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, confusion, vertigo, tremors, agitation, appetite changes – weight loss or gain, itching or mild skin rash, increased sweating, loss of interest in sex. Side effects not listed here that become troublesome should be discussed with your doctor.
Many drugs can interact with Wellbutrin SR, including prescriptions, vitamins, minerals, herbal derivatives, and over-the-counter medications. Do not start a new medication without first discussing it with your doctor.

In addition, the 100-mg tablet contains FD&C Blue No. 1 Lake, the 150-mg tablet contains FD&C Blue No. 2 Lake and FD&C Red No. 40 Lake, and the 200-mg tablet contains FD&C Red No. 40 Lake. The molecular weight is 276.2. The molecular formula is C13H18ClNO·HCl. Bupropion hydrochloride powder is white, crystalline, and highly soluble in water. It has a bitter taste and produces the sensation of local anesthesia on the oral mucosa.
