Oxycontin, also called Oxycodone is a Narcotic Analgesic used to treat pain. Oxycontin works in the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain.
Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you are, or become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.
Avoid alcohol when taking this medicine.
It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. Do not take more or less medicine than directed, and don’t stop taking Oxycontin without discussing it with your doctor first.
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.
Get medical help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur: cold, clammy skin; confusion; convulsions; dizziness; drowsiness; low blood pressure; nervousness or restlessness; pinpoint pupils of eyes; slow heartbeat; slow or troubled breathing; or weakness.
Tell your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat; feelings of unreality; hallucinations; hives, itching, or skin rash; irregular breathing; mental depression or other mood or mental changes; ringing or buzzing in the ears; shortness of breath, wheezing, or troubled breathing; swelling of face; trembling or uncontrolled muscle movements; or unusual excitement or restlessness.
OxyContin (oxycodone hydrochloride controlled-release) tablets are an opioid analgesic supplied in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg tablet strengths for oral administration. The tablet strengths describe the amount of oxycodone per tablet as the hydrochloride salt. Its molecular formula is C18H21NO4 · HCl. Its molecular weight is 351.83. Oxycodone is a white, odorless crystalline powder derived from the opium alkaloid, thebaine. Oxycodone hydrochloride dissolves in water (1 g in 6 to 7 mL). It is slightly soluble in alcohol (octanol water partition coefficient 0.7). The tablets contain the following inactive ingredients: ammonio methacrylate copolymer, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, povidone, red iron oxide (20 mg strength tablet only), stearyl alcohol, talc, titanium dioxide, triacetin, yellow iron oxide (40 mg strength tablet only), yellow iron oxide with FD&C blue No.2 (80 mg strength tablet only), FD&C blue No.2 (160 mg strength tablet only) and other ingredients.
