Naproxen, also called Aleve, is a Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID), and is used to relieve some symptoms caused by arthritis. It is also used treat other conditions, such as: gout attacks; bursitis; tendonitis; sprains, strains, or other injuries; or menstrual cramps, and is used to reduce fever.
Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.
Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. Do not take more or less medicine than directed. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.
Stop taking Aleve and get help immediately if any of the following side effects occur: fainting; fast or irregular breathing; fast, irregular heartbeat or pulse; hive-like swellings on face, eyelids, mouth, lips, or tongue; puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes; shortness of breath, troubled breathing, wheezing, or tightness in the chest.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any of the following: abdominal or stomach pain, cramping, or burning; bloody or black, tarry stools; chest pain; convulsions; fever with or without chills; nausea, heartburn, and/or indigestion; pinpoint red spots on skin; sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips or in mouth; spitting up blood; unexplained nosebleeds; unusual bleeding or bruising; and vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds.
The chemical names for naproxen and naproxen sodium are (S)-6-methoxy-a-methyl-2-naphthaleneacetic acid and (S)-6-methoxy-a-methyl-2-naphthaleneacetic acid, sodium salt, respectively. Naproxen has a molecular weight of 230.26 and a molecular formula of C14H14O3. Naproxen sodium has a molecular weight of 252.23 and a molecular formula of C14H13NaO3. NAPROSYN (naproxen tablets) is available as yellow tablets containing 250 mg of naproxen, peach tablets containing 375 mg of naproxen and yellow tablets containing 500 mg of naproxen for oral administration. The inactive ingredients are croscarmellose sodium, iron oxides, povidone and magnesium stearate. NAPROSYN (naproxen suspension) is available as a light orange-colored opaque oral suspension containing 125 mg/5 mL of naproxen in a vehicle containing sucrose, magnesium aluminum silicate, sorbitol solution and sodium chloride (30 mg/5 mL, 1.5 mEq), methylparaben, fumaric acid, FD&C Yellow No. 6, imitation pineapple flavor, imitation orange flavor and purified water. The pH of the suspension ranges from 2.2 to 3.7.
