Gemfibrozil, known also as Lopid, is used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. This may help prevent medical problems caused by such substances clogging the blood vessels.

Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you are, or become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, as it is thought that Gemfibrozil may adversely affect your baby. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.

It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: cough or hoarseness; fever or chills; lower back or side pain; painful or difficult urination; stomach pain with nausea and vomiting.

Talk with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occurs: muscle pain; unusual tiredness or weakness; or continuing or bothersome stomach pain, gas, heartburn, diarrhea; nausea or vomiting; or skin rash.

Each tablet contains 600 mg gemfibrozil. Each also contains calcium stearate; candelilla wax FCC; microcrystalline cellulose; hydroxypropyl cellulose; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, USP; methylparaben, NF; Opaspray white; polyethylene glycol; polysorbate 80; propylparaben; colloidal silicon dioxide; pregelatinized starch. The chemical name is 5- (2,5-dimethylphenoxy)-2,2-dimethylpentanoic acid. The empirical formula is C15H22O3 and the molecular weight is 250.35; the solubility in water and acid is 0.0019% and in dilute base it is greater than 1%. The melting point is 58-61C. Gemfibrozil is a white solid which is stable under ordinary conditions.
