Foradil, known also as Formoterol, belongs to the family of medicines known as [beta ]2 -agonists. It is used to help prevent the symptoms of asthma. When used regularly Foradil decreases the number and severity of asthma attacks, but it will not relieve an asthma attack that has already started. Foradil works by preventing certain cells from releasing substances that cause asthma symptoms. Foradil is also used for patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you are, or become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, as it is unknown how Foradil may affect your baby. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: chills; cold or flu-like symptoms; cough or hoarseness; fever; sneezing; sore throat; body aches or pain; chest pain or discomfort; congestion; cough producing mucous; difficulty breathing; dry throat; headache; labored breathing; pain or tenderness around eyes and cheekbones; runny nose; shortness of breath; tender, swollen glands in neck; tightness in chest; trauma; trouble swallowing; voice changes; wheezing; convulsions; decreased urine; dry mouth; fainting; fast pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse palpitations; increased thirst; irregular heartbeat; loss of appetite; or noisy breathing.
The active component of FORADIL is formoterol fumarate, a racemate. Formoterol fumarate is a selective beta2-adrenergic bronchodilator. Its chemical name is (± )-2-hydroxy-5-[(1RS) -1-hydroxy-2- [[(1RS) -2-(4-methoxyphenyl) -1-methylethyl] -amino]ethyl]formanilide fumarate dihydrate. Formoterol fumarate has a molecular weight of 840.9, and its empirical formula is (C19H24N2O4)2•C4H4O4•2H2O. Formoterol fumarate is a white to yellowish crystalline powder, which is freely soluble in glacial acetic acid, soluble in methanol, sparingly soluble in ethanol and isopropanol, slightly soluble in water, and practically insoluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, and diethyl ether.
