Eurax is the brand name for the topical medication crotamiton. Eurax is used to treat scabies, meaning it is a scabicide. A scabicide kills scabies. Scabies is a contagious infection that is caused by a tiny mite or insect called Sarcoptes scbiei. Eurax also treats the itching associated with scabies. Eurax can also be prescribed for other conditions not described here.
This medication cannot be taken orally. This medication is to be used only as prescribed. Do not put this medication in the eyes, nose or mouth. Sexual partners and other intimate contacts need to be treated as well for scabies. Re-infection can be prevented by washing all clothing, hats, bed linens, hair brushes and combs with a strong cleaner and very hot water. The washing will remove mites and eggs.
If you have had an allergic reaction to crotamiton or Eurax do not use it again. The US FDA categorizes drugs based on safety for pregnant women. Eurax is categorized as C. This indicates that this drug may cause harm to an unborn child, but you should discuss all risk factors with your doctor before taking this medication if you are expecting. Eurax can pass through breast milk to an infant. Do not take Eurax if you are nursing; discuss the safety with the pediatrician and your physician first.
Use Eurax exactly as directed by your physician, or follow the instructions that come in the product packaging. If you have any questions talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. Do not use more medication than prescribed. To treat scabies first shake the lotion well, then apply a thin layer of the product on all body parts from the neck to the soles of your feet. Scabies do not normally affect the scalp. Apply the medication to dry skin and rub in well. Leave the medication on for twenty four hours. At the end of the twenty four hours apply a second dose and wait another twenty four hours, WITHOUT washing off the first application. At the end of 48 hours, thoroughly wash off the second application. To treat the itching, massage the medication into the affected area and repeat as necessary or directed. Do not put the medication in wounds or open sores or cuts. Flush with water thoroughly if you get the medication in the eyes, nose or mouth. Store this medication at room temperature and away from moisture.
Two doses of Eurax are required to cure the scabies. If you miss a dose, you may have to restart the therapy. Contact your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you miss a dose. If you overdose seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an overdose are a burning feeling in the mouth, irritation, inflammation of the mouth, stomach, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Avoid sexual contact until you are cured of the infection. Avoid sharing hair combs, accessories, hats, clothing, bed linens, and other personal use items. Scabies is highly contagious. Use only what is prescribed and how it is prescribed, so not over use as it can be dangerous.
Serious side effects are highly unlikely. A severe reaction indicates an allergy, to this drug, which may be life-threatening, seek emergency medical intervention. Allergic reaction presents as shortness of breath, hives, swelling of lips, throat, face or tongue, fainting or rash. Other reactions can be mild itching, burning upon application. If your condition gets worse contact your doctor. Other side effects may occur that are not described here. If you experience any side effects that are worrisome, then contact your doctor.
When using Eurax, do not use other lotions or creams on the affected area. Some drugs may interact with this medication. Consult your doctor before taking any medication, whether over-the-counter, prescription, vitamins, minerals or herbal remedies.

Eurax, crotamiton USP, is a scabicidal and antipruritic agent available as a cream or lotion for topical use only. Eurax provides 10% (w/w) of the synthetic, crotamiton USP, in a vanishing-cream or emollient-lotion base containing: water, petrolatum, propylene glycol, steareth-2, cetyl alcohol, dimethicone, laureth-23, fragrance, magnesium aluminum silicate, carbomer-934, sodium hydroxide, diazolidinyl urea, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone and magnesium nitrate. In addition, the cream contains glyceryl-stearate. Crotamiton is N-ethyl-N-(o-methylphenyl)-2-butenamide. Its molecular weight is 203.28.
