Diovan HCT, a combination of Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide, is one of a class of medicines called high blood pressure medicines. Valsartan works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. Hydrochlorothiazide helps reduce the amount of salt and water in the body by working to increase the flow of urine; this also helps to lower blood pressure.
Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you are, or become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, as Diovan HCT can cause potentially serious complications for both you and your baby. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.
It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. Do not take more or less medicine than directed, and don’t stop taking Diovan HCT without discussing it with your doctor first.
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.
Contact your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: itching, pain, redness, or swelling of eye or eyelid, watering of eyes, troubled breathing or wheezing, severe skin rash or hives, and flushing; chills, fever, and sore throat; bloating or pain of the stomach, fever, nausea, and vomiting; fainting; yellow eyes or skin; or
If you have any of the symptoms of fluid and electrolyte imbalance: confusion; convulsions (seizures); dizziness or lightheadedness; diminished urine output; drowsiness or sluggishness; dry mouth; fast heartbeat; muscle cramps or pain; muscle fatigue; nausea and vomiting; restlessness; thirst; or weakness.
Diovan HCT (valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, USP) is a combination of valsartan, an orally active, specific angiotensin II antagonist acting on the AT1 receptor subtype, and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. Diovan HCT tablets are formulated for oral administration to contain valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide, USP 80/12.5 mg, 160/12.5 mg, 160/25 mg, 320/12.5 mg and 320/25 mg. The inactive ingredients of the tablets are colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxides, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, talc, and titanium dioxide.
