Ativan, known also as Lorazepam, is a Benzodiazepine that belongs to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Ativan is used as an Amnestic, Antianxiety Agent, Anticonvulsant, Antiemetic in Cancer Chemotherapy, Antipanic Agent, Antitremor Agent, a Sedative, and a Muscle Relaxant.

Be sure to tell your doctor of any allergies you have whether it is to medication or food, preservatives, or dyes. Tell your doctor immediately if you are, or become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also, tell your doctor of any other medications you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, and any medical conditions you may have.

Avoid alcohol when taking this medicine.

It is very important that you take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you to. Do not take more or less medicine than directed, and never stop taking Ativan without discussing it with your doctor first.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do NOT double doses.

Tell your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: anxiety; confusion; fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat; mental depression; abnormal thinking, including disorientation, delusions, or loss of sense of reality; agitation; behavior changes, including aggressive behavior, bizarre behavior, decreased inhibition, or outbursts of anger; convulsions; hallucinations; low blood pressure; muscle weakness; skin rash or itching; sore throat, fever, and chills; trouble in sleeping; ulcers or sores in mouth or throat; uncontrolled movements of body, including the eyes; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual excitement, nervousness, or irritability; unusual tiredness or weakness; or yellow eyes or skin.

Lorazepam, an antianxiety agent, has the chemical formula, 7-chloro-5-(0-chlorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-3- hydroxy-2H-1,4-benzo-diazepin-2-one.

Tablets: It is a nearly white powder almost insoluble in water. Each Ativan tablet, to be taken orally, contains 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg of lorazepam. The inactive ingredients present are lactose and other ingredients.

Injection: Lorazepam injection, a benzodiazepine with antianxiety and sedative effects, is intended for intramuscular or intravenous route of administration. Lorazepam is a nearly white powder almost insoluble in water. Each ml of sterile Ativan injection contains either 2.0 or 4.0 mg of lorazepam, 0.18 ml polyethylene glycol 400 in propylene glycol with 2.0% benzyl alcohol as preservative.

I love it. I lost my Dad in March and started to have panic attacks. My doctor put me on a low dose of ativan (.5) and it has helped me with my panic.
