New International Conference On Processing Pharmaceutical Polymers, 20-21 June 2007, Basel, Switzerland
Rapra Technology will be organising its first international conference on Processing Pharmaceutical Polymers on 20-21 June 2007 in Basel, Switzerland. Papers are currently being invited for this inaugural meeting. The chemical versatility of polymers offers many possibilities for the formulation of therapeutic agents. Pharmaceutical polymers are not simply used in the packaging of medicines, but are commonly used as excipients, playing an important role in conventional dosage forms and in controlled drug delivery systems, where their unique physicochemical properties can help control the release of the drug.

Clearly pharmaceutical polymers must not interfere or compromise the therapeutic action of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and critically, the physical properties of the polymer must be consistent and reproducible from batch to batch. Indeed variations in particle size, amorphousness and crystallisation can make a world of difference to the quality of a pharmaceutical polymer. Particle characteristics can affect many different areas including inhalation delivery systems, tablet dissolution characteristics, formulation quality and solubility or absorption.

Polymer suppliers are continuously striving to produce cleaner materials with more-precise specifications and increased functionality. Although there are many pharmaceutical polymers which can perform similar functions, the key is to develop a product with a significant processing advantage that performs consistently well in a manufacturing setting to help pharmaceutical formulators in scale-up.

Rapra Technology is organising this conference to bring together the pharmaceutical supply chain to hear about the latest research and techniques for the process optimisation of pharmaceutical polymers. Papers are currently being invited on the following subjects:
  • Case studies of materials selection and product design/processing for specific applications
  • How to ensure short development time with low risk on changes
  • Tableting with polymers
  • Film coating of dosage forms with polymers
  • Extruded (hot melt extruded and wet mass extruded) dosage forms
  • Influence of processing conditions on the degradation of the polymers
  • Quality requirements for pharmaceutical components:
    • test criteria for release of products
    • material inspection
    • serial tests on finished products
  • Medical polymers: final inspection and release criteria / GMP at polymer compounding?
  • Improvement on manufacturing process and quality assurance
  • PQRI regulations
  • Pharmaceutical packaging: containers and closure systems

This conference provides an opportunity and a platform to present your research, product or process developments in this area to an influential and informed audience. You are invited to present a paper at this event; please send a title, short summary, speaker name(s) and company name(s) to Alix Yates email ayates@rapra.net or Fax +44(0)1939 252416 by the deadline of 19th January 2007.

Presenting authors at Processing Pharmaceutical Polymers 2007 will be entitled to free registration on both days of the conference including meals, refreshments and a copy of the proceedings.
