  Supplement

A dietary supplement is usually prescribed by a physician with the intentions of supplying back to the body the missing or lacking nutrient to prevent nutritional related diseases. It is also given if a particular nutrient is not consumed in sufficient amount in a person with a bad dietary habits otherwise poor unbalanced diet. These important nutrients include fat soluble vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K, water soluble vitamins like the B-complex group and vitamin C (ascorbic acid), minerals, fatty acids like omega-3 oils or amino acids.

A dietary supplement may be in the form of herbal products particularly those which have a past history of claims that these plants are really medicinal in nature and can cure or prevent certain diseases. These medicinal plants are usually prescribed by those health practitioners in the alternative or complementary medicine. Doctors may prescribe daily use of multivitamins and minerals not only in patients with chronic illness who are nutritionally deprived and immunocompromised , but also for those individuals in the convalescence or recovery stage and even for healthy adults as well. Some of these dietary supplements are also believed to be immune system booster that enhances its function in fighting off disease and provides better protection and prevention of sickness.

In the United States, the following criteria must be met first by a product before it is considered to be called a dietary supplement : First, if the product is intended to supplement the diet, it must bear or contain any one or more of the following dietary ingredients including a vitamin, a mineral, a herb or other botanical plants (excluding tobacco), an amino acid, a dietary substance to supplement the diet by increasing the total daily intake (e.g., enzymes or tissues from organs or glands), a concentrate, such as a meal replacement or energy bar, a metabolite, constituent, or an extract. Secondly, the product is intended for ingestion in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form. Third, the product is not represented for use as a conventional food or as the sole item of a meal and lastly, it is must be labeled as a "dietary supplement".

The regulation of dietary supplements as foods, and not as drugs is under the FDA (Food and Drugs Authority) governing body. Unlike drugs, the FDA does not pre-approve dietary supplements based on their safety and efficacy and they can only go after the manufacturers of the dietary supplements after they have made available the unsafe products on the market. Moreover, a dietary supplement would be considered only as unapproved and thus an illegal drug once it was sold and marketed as a dietary supplement that is claiming to prevent or cure a specific disease or medical condition like for example, “cod liver oil prevents liver diseases”.

On the other hand, dietary supplements are allowed to make some structure and/ or function claims which are actually broad and generalized claims that the product can support the particular structure or function of the body (e.g., "glucosamine helps support healthy joints"). Nevertheless, there are still many critics with objections in relation to dietary supplements that overstate its importance and impact on the overall health and well being of an individual. Supporting evidence such as a double-blind randomized trials which are statistically significant are still insufficient to reinforce the claims of most dietary supplements.

Certain foods (such as infant formula and medical foods like ensure, etc.) are considered special nutritional supplements. This is due to the fact that they are consumed by the populations considered to be highly vulnerable thus, the regulation of these products are stricter than the majority of dietary supplements.
