| Irritation and swelling of the paranasal sinuses is called sinusitis, which may or may not be as a result of infection, from bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune disease. Viruses or bacteria or combination of both can cause sinusitis. When an individual has a cold, that person also has soreness of the sinuses. This is viral sinusitis. When the nasal congestion associated with cold or allergies does not allow the sinuses to drain properly, bacteria can trapped inside the sinuses and this can develop into bacterial sinusitis.

A person may have bacterial sinusitis if he experienced the following: A stuffy or runny nose with a daytime cough lasting for 10 to 14 days with no treatment, persistent dull ache or swelling around the eyes, mucus discharge from the nose, softness or pain in or around the cheekbones, a feeling of heaviness in your head, a headache when you get up in the morning or when twisting, bad breath even after brushing and a fever greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Visit your physician if you experienced any of this.
Using warm saline solution, taking analgesics, hot drinks such as tea and chicken soup, inhaling steam, over-the-counter decongestants, nasal spray and getting plenty of rest are some of the therapeutic measures which can be use in treating sinusitis. If your physician gives you antibiotics for bacterial sinusitis, you may need to take them for three weeks, depending on the time you have had the symptoms. Your physician may also give you decongestant for all forms of sinusitis. If your sinusitis is due to allergies, you may also be given antihistamine as well and if there is no improvement in your sinusitis within 48 hours or is causing you much pain, you should consult your doctor who may prescribe antibiotics or nasal steroid and if the dosage and length of antibiotic treatment are not effective, see your doctor again who may recommend further treatment.
By making some simple changes in your home environment, this can lower your risk of getting sinusitis. You can also try using humidifier in cold weather to prevent dry, heated air from irritating your sinuses, which can make them more at risk to infection. Clean the humidifier often because mold, can start allergies in some people, forms easily in moist environments.
If you have allergies, make more effort to keep them under control because they can make a person at risk in developing a sinus infection.
Although sinusitis itself is not communicable, it is often preceded by a cold, which can be spread to family members and friends. The most efficient way to avoid the spread of germs is to clean your hands often and thoroughly. Steer clear of used tissues, and try to stay out when someone sneezes.
If your physician gave you antibiotics or any other medications, be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Sinusitis can be hard to get rid of otherwise it can simply return if it is not treated properly the first time. Even if you feel better, it is important to continue taking your antibiotics until you have finished the course prescribed by your doctor. This helps to destroy all of the bacteria causing the infection.
