  Allergies

Your eyes itch, your nose is running, you're sneezing, and you may even be covered in hives. Ah, the joys of allergy season. So, exactly what can you do to feel better, anyway?

Allergic reactions can be mild, like a runny nose, or they can be severe, like difficulty breathing. Some types of allergies produce multiple symptoms, and in rare cases, an allergic reaction can become very severe and result in anaphylaxis. Some of the signs of anaphylaxis are difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat or other parts of the body, and dizziness or loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis generally occurs only minutes after exposure to the trigger, but may take as long as 4 hours to occur.

Allergies

Some of the most common allergens are:

Food allergies, which are most common in infants and often go away as a child gets older. The foods that people are most commonly allergic to are dairy products, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts and tree nuts, and seafood.

Insect bites and stings can cause severe reactions in some people. The venom in insect bites and stings can even cause anaphylaxis.

Airborne particles, often called environmental allergens, are the most common allergens. Some examples are dust mites; mold spores; animal dander; and pollen from grass, ragweed, and trees.

Medicines, are also among the most common of allergens, antibiotics being among the worst offenders. Many other medicines, including over-the-counter medications, can also cause allergic reactions.

Chemicals found is some cosmetics or laundry detergents can also cause people to break out in an itchy rash. Dyes, household cleaners, and pesticides used on lawns or plants can also cause allergic reactions.

If your family doctor suspects you might have an allergy, he might refer you to an allergist for further testing. The allergy specialist will ask you questions both about your own allergy symptoms, and whether any family members have allergies. They will also perform certain tests to confirm an allergy. These may include a skin test or blood test.

The most effective way to avoid allergic reactions is to stay away from the substances that cause them. If this is not possible or practical, your doctor may treat your allergies using medications and shots.

If your doctor does prescribe medication or shots, be sure to follow dosing and frequency directions exactly. The treatment won’t help if you don’t follow your doctor’s advice.
