Sneezing s a bodily reflex that starts with an irritation in the nose lining and ends with a burst of air from the nose and mouth. Sneezing is the body’s way of protecting it from irritants and germs. Sneezing can be caused by a variety of irritants, such as allergies (pollen, animal, dust), strong smells, temperature changes and infections.

When the nerves in the lining of the nose detect and irritant, it sends signals to the brain. The signals then cause the brain to send the message to the body to sneeze. The sneeze does not just involve the nose. The brain sends neural messages to the muscles of the abdomen, diaphragm, neck, eyelids, chest, mucus glands and blood vessels of the nose and face. It is impossible to keep your eyes open when sneezing.

Allergies cause individuals to produce histamine which irritates nerve endings causing itching and sneezing. The irritants also cause the nose to swell, leak fluid and create more mucus, hence the runny nose. Anti-histamines block this response and relieve allergy symptoms. A nasal steroid spray can also treat sneezing and inflammation due to allergies.

Sever hay fever allergies can be incapacitating, producing physical and emotional exhaustion. Fortunately, there is a good variety of treatment options available to sufferers.

Interesting Sneezing Facts
“God Bless You”, often said after someone sneezes is believed to have originated during the Bubonic Plague.

Sun sneezing is known as Photic sneezing and often runs in families occurring in about twenty-five percent of the population.

The speed of a sneeze is about seventy-five miles per hour.

A recent United States health recommendation for sneezing is to sneeze into the elbow instead of the hand – reducing the potential for spreading germs.

* The world record for sneezing is held by Donna Griffiths from Worstershire in the UK, who sneezed for 978 days in a row!
